This session culminates in the historic battle of Castle Blade, a.k.a. Blade Keep. After numerous turns and twists, dark days and glimmers of hope, an army of over 3600 hobgoblins (90% of force) , wolf riders, bugbears, ogres, and hill giants led by the hobgoblin King Vanrakesh and a powerful mature adult green dragon reached the east side of Castle Blade – with the dragon leading the charge. This force was met by about 1,700 Purple Dragon footmen, archers, and cavalrymen, Blade Keep regulars, MarcusLor’s cavalry, a small group of priests and War Wizards, and the Covenant of the Blade (COB)

The COB’s plan put their limited army hidden in a fortified position in the forest to the west, leaving the palisade and castle empty – except for the adventurers. Early that morning, Zanakin met the enemy est of the castle in an effort to draw the dragon to the castle before the enemy army arrived – which worked. The epic battle ensured outside, then inside the keep walls, where a well prepared COB met the green dragon in hand-to-hand combat. With no casualties, the COB was able to defeat the dragon, and flee west towards the wood line where the allied army awaited.

The humanoids attacked the empty castle and razed the palisade before the horns of Cormyr called their attention to the wood line. The humanoids regrouped and marched on the wood line, and met the allies head-on in cataclysmic combat. The eastern hobgoblins that the COB had an alliance with turned on their arch-enemy in the midst of the battle, and helped stem the onslaught of the superior enemy hobgoblin force.

Combat did not last not more than 10 minutes, and a surgical attack by members of the COB to kill King Vanrakesh, his evil priestess and bodyguards spelled the defeat of the enemy, but not before many hundreds fell on the battlefield.

At the end of the day, the party’s assessment was captured here:
‘As the sunlight starts to pass the zenith of the sun on the 14th of Deepwinter, you traverse the scene of carnage and ruin. To the east is a dark plume of smoke rising gently towards the Thunder Peaks – the last remnants of the wooden palisade slowly burning away. The castle still stands, but you know that the inner rooms have been ransacked. Around the edge of the wood line, in an area about 1000 feet by 400 feet, the snow is almost completely gone. It has been replaced by trampled mud, remnants of armor and weapons, blood, and broken bodies. In some areas there may be 5 feet between adjacent bodies, but in other areas, such as where the spike wall had been, piles of dead number stack upon one another. Hobgoblins, bugbears, ogres, hill giants, humans, horses and dire wolves lie side by side on the field with one thing in common, today was the day of their last breath.

You see the final battle to protect Alusair was about 20 feet behind the spike wall, the initial defensive line had broken, but not the will of the allied warriors to fight. It is to your estimation that the total fight from the time of the first arrow until the enemy began to break contact lasted a little over 5 minutes.

Maybe today you wonder if it is all worth it? Was the death and destruction of so many goodhearted warriors worth this little spot of land between the Hullack and the ThunderPeaks that you call home? To the families of the nearly 500 Cormyrian’s that lost their lives on the field today, that may be a question that will be asked for years to come…’

The final tally after the end of the battle was:
Type 1) Start 2) Survived 3) Killed
Purple Dragon & Allied Footmen: 1) 422 2) 105 3) 317
Purple Dragon & Allied Archers: 1) 422 2) 376 3) 46
Purple Dragon & Allied Cavalry: 1) 335 2) 212 3) 123
Allied Priests 1) 5 2) 3 3) 2
Allied War Wizards 1) 3 2) 3 3) 0
Allied Hobgoblins 1) 599 2) 58 3) 541
Total Allies Killed 980

Enemy Hobgoblin Killed 1864
Enemy Bugbear Killed 215

Maythor tells Thalik of the situation, and Thalik is not willing to help based on a dream. Maythor and Thalik have a very heated discussion, with Devrille helping to diplomatically keep the two from escalating the argument.

In the end, Thalik reluctantly agrees to send a small force of archers and footmen towards Blade Keep. Maythor does not believe it is enough men, but it is all Thalik will allow to leave the Garrison of over 1,000 Purple Dragons.

In the end, Thalik agrees to send a supporting force (since he knows Maythor and COB are friends with Azoun Obarskyr IV, King of Cormyr). He agrees to send 55 Cavalry, 300 footmen, and 300 archers. They will leave in 1 day.

The note tells them that they have been acquired by a powerful group of tribes from the north, supported by a green dragon, which will be attacking Blade Keep. Their goal is to rid these lands of human intrusion. Klug’s message says that if the humans stand and fight, his hobgoblin army will turn and fight their oppressors when the time is right!

The World Serpent Inn

Date: Fall 2008
Not sure on the date

Timeline: 9 Marpenoth (DR 1363) – 29 Marpenoth (DR 1363)

9 Marpenoth [OCT] (DR 1363)
Party: Maythor (LV 10), Zanakin (LV 11), and Shandra (LV 8)

Zanakin teleports the party to Arabel this evening. Shandra has made enough experience and hopes to train for Level 1 Ranger.

Maythor visits a tattoo artist in Arabel, a Half-Orc named Zelslan BoarAxe. Maythor has tattoos placed upon his arms, most likely in remembrance of his demise to the Blackguard.

Note: Maythor may have had these removed at some later time via magics.

10 Marpenoth
The party discusses training options with some key leaders of Arabel at the palace (which is under reconstruction from the battle of Arabel). The Arabellian leadership will find a Ranger on retainer for her to train with. Shandra takes her leave from Maythor and Zanakin.

Shandra’s training will take 90 days.

That evening, Zanakin and Maythor decide to visit the Grey Goose and try to enter the World Serpent Inn. From previous discussions with Calais Bryant, they know there is some magical portal that must be opened outside the door of the Grey Goose to enter the world Serpent Inn.

Upon reaching the Grey Goose, they enter and discuss with Shult. Shult tells them that they have been welcomesd to the World SErpent, which is one of the keys to access. They must stand outside the entrance of the grey Goose, and wait for the wind to change. Once this happens, they must say the magical command “The Ruze of Rickthia” at that exact time.

Both characters leave the Grey Goose, and under nightfall wait outside the door. While they wait, they find a breeze from the west pick up through the city streets. Upon saying the command word, Maythor says the command word. Once said, nothing changes around them with the exception of the sign above the door now is a coiled serpent wrapped around a globe. Maythor and Zanakin enter the door…

Inside the door is a carpeted passage of wooden walls with doors around, and an entrance at the end of the hall. Walking through that entrance, or exit, the party passes a large Djinni creature whom seems to be a guard. Turning a corner, the men arrive at the very large main chamber of the World Serpent Inn! At that time, a large booming voice coming from the center of the Inn welcomes them by name! It is legendary Milchifer who welcomes them.

The men talk briefly with Milchifer, and rest uneasily in a huge tavern of various levels filled with all types of denizens, much of which the characters have never seen. Milchifer is assisted by gnome-like creatures that run errands, ales, and food throughout the tavern. Inside the tavern are human warriors dressed from various parts of the realms or unknown lands, and creatures such as a few Demi-Humans, Drow, a Frost Giant, a Mindflayer, Githyanki, a few Tieflings, and other creatures they have never seen. The power of the creatures there is unmistakable, this is not a place to get into a fight; which is against the rules they find; else ne would raise the enmity of Milchifer.

They stay for some time drinking strong ale and keeping a low profile. Afterward, they leave through the door they came from, and return to Arabel. Milchifer bids them farewell before leaving.

The parry returns to Arabel and stayas at the Craftsmans Doorway for the evening.

11 Marpenoth
Zanakin and Maythor travel back to Castle Blade via teleport. They find Corenia at Castle Blade, along with Morthrou.

Maythor and Zanakin stay at the Keep and watch construction activities.

12 Marpenoth
Zanakin scry’s upon the enemy rogue which eluded the in the last battle. He finds he is at a tavern in Ravensgate the Living City!

Zanakin teleports himself and Maythor to the Inn, and they engage the unprepared rogue in the midst of the tavern denizens. The rogue is defeated easily as he was unprepared for their attack. This surgical strike attack was noted as being on the edge of what good characters normally do, but under the circumstances, he was an evil enemy that should be dealt with. The tavern empties, Maythor and Zanakin grab his gear, and leave the tavern before the towns guard arrives.

13 Marpenoth

Over the next few days, a powerful blizzard covers the area in a foot of snow, effectively halting keep construction.

20 Marpenoth
Maythor and Zanakin are visited by a War Wizard, Phergrias Deegrin, and told they have been summoned for immediate counsel with King Azoun IV.

21 Marpenoth
Zanakin and Maythor teleport to Suzail and walk to the palace to seek audience with the King.

Myzbaraki of Mulmaster, Mulmaster’s Cormyiran ambassador, seeks audience with King Azoun IV. For the meeting, Azoun IV required Maythor and Zanakin to be at the meeting. In the throne room, Myzbaraki charges that the COB (Maytor and Zanakin) are guilty of murder to one of the Mulmaster Lords, and his assistants

King Azoun IV brings forth the message that their was no murder, only retribution for an evil act committed by the Mulmaster Lord in the lands of Cormyr. Azoun IV will not hand over any members of the COB.

Myzbaraki tells the King that the COB are outlaws in Mulmaster, and they will be arrested if they set foot in the city. He also states that this will not be soon forgotten in Mulmaster inner circles, since one of the members of the COB is a lord of Cormyr.

King Azoun IV dismisses the ambassador to Mulmaster.

After the meeting, the King scolds Maythor and Zanakin on their actions, and explains that their actions could bring retribution from kingdoms outside of Cormyr. He states that if Maythor is going to take part in such acts, while actions for good in some circles, he cannot hold the title of Duke if he will do so.

afterward, the men stay at Crownguard Keep.

23 Marpenoth
Zanakin visits a tavern owner at the Dragon Jaw Tavern named Pendarik for information around Hullack forest. Pendarik tells him of some ancient elven ruins north of the trade route that may be of some interest to him.

Zanakin begins training in the War Wizard Towers and War Wizard Libraries. This is not level training, rather some spell trading and training. It is during this training period he finds maps of the Hullack, and the ancient elven ruins Pendarik spoke of.

During Zanakin’s studies, he also finds information on the Rod of Veskra. The information is:

1) The Rod has seven pieces
2) The Rod of Veskra was a staff of Wizard Kings. When fully assembled, it gave the owner ultimate power like a very powerful “Staff of Power”.
3) The last known owner before its disassembly was Vendrathias, a Wizard King of Chessenta many years ago.
4) The history before Vendrathis is a succession of very powerful (epic level) wizards.

While Zanakin trains, Maythor takes leave of Suzail, and travels to Bervelek to visit his father. He rides on borrowed ount from Silversword Manor.

24 Marpenoth
Zanakin arranges for spell trades at the War Wizard towers through a system at the libraries. Some gold is exchanged for his training of new spells

25 Marpenoth
Maythor spends time with his father and sister. Maythor tells Falcren II of his monetary problems at Castle Blade. Falcren II gives Maythor what is left of the family treasury to hep with the costs, 14,000 gp.

Maythor also meets Erik, whom had been training to 1st level Fighter at Bervelak. Erik decides to travel with Maythor to Castle Blade.

28 Marpenoth
Zanakin uses the alchemy shop at the War Wizard towers to identify potions.

29 Marpenoth
Zanakin, Maythor, and Erik met at Silversword Manor (east of Suzail).

Zanakin trains Fighter for Level 12 with Maythor, and Ride skills (24 days).
Maythor and Erik trains Zanakin’s Fighter
Maythor pre-trains Level 11, including improving his Jump skill (pre-train).

The Grand Deliverer (Blackguard) & the Death of Maythor

Date: Summer 2008
Not sure on date

Timeline: 18 Eleint (DR 1363) – 9 Marpenoth (DR 1363)

18 Eleint [SEP] (DR 1363)
After the High Priest of Tyr takes his leave of the party at Castle Blade, Zanakin prepares to use his magical prowess and attempt to track down the evildoers. That day, Zanakin and Shandra teleport to the outskirts of Mulmaster to study the fortified port city, and try to ascertain where the party came from.

Meriam provided detailed descriptions of the party, and they know the party hails form Mulmaster. Zanakin’s plan is to scry on the characters and try to determine where their home base is.

Calais Bryant, Meriam, and a War Wizard stay in proximity to Castle Blade, awaiting word from Zanakin.

Maythor has picked his training up for Level 11 again.

19 Eleint
Zanakin and Shandra are very careful to not be identified in Mulmaster. They stay at a local, run-down Inn on the outside of town. Zanakin uses his Ring of Chameleon Power as a disguise, and Shandra uses her rogue abilities. For the next 3 days, Zanain attempts to find information using scry spells.

At Castle Blade, Devrille uses Stone Shape on the castle walls.

22 Eleint
Shandra has been entering the city of Mulmaster in an attempt to gather information. She succeeds on the Minator, and finds that he usually scene at a small town in the southern mountains (a city that falls under Mulmaster’s power). She also finds out the the Minator works with a powerful ally of the Mulmaster High Blade, a powerful warrior with the title “Grand Deliverer”. It is believed he is a Blackguard.

23 Eleint
Zanakin’s scry is successful on the wizard this day, and he sees him talking to the Grand Deliverer (or so he believes) in a chamber that looks to be a castle chamber.

Zanakin contacts Maythor via the Brooch of Corellon and provides him updated information. Maythor in turn alerts Calais Bryant.

25 Eleint
Over the next few days, Zanakin continues to scry on the enemy adventuring band and Grand Deliverer. Many times it is not successful. His ultimate goal is to determine where they are located. It is in this time he finds the evil rogue that was with the party. They determine the rogue is in Mulmaster, and is separated from the party.

26 Eleint
Calais Bryant, Meriam, and the War Wizard arrive via teleport to the outskirts of Mulmaster where Zanakin and Shandra are staying. Remember, this quest is for justice due. Calais Bryant, because of his stature and the fact he is known in Mulmaster, is not able to stay, though he wishes he could. He would jeopardize the adventure.

27 Eleint
That morning, Calais Bryant and the War Wizard leave.

Zanakin picks up the scrying again from his small room, with Shandra going into town occasionally to gather information. Most times his scrys do not work, but at times they do. Unfortunately he is not able to determine the exact location of the enemy, with the exception of the rogue.

Meriam stays low and quiet during this time, knowing she must not give away her profession, otherwise it would jeopardize the mission. Often times she spends the days outside in seclusion, near the small town that Zanakin and Shandra have been staying.

*30 Eleint
Zanakin continues to scry, with Shandra carefully gathering information. The town the Grand Deliver’s castle is near a town called Kiram.

1 Special Day High Harvestide

1 Marpenoth [OCT] (DR 1363)
While the notes of this day have been lost to time, it was noted that Shandra was angry at Zanakin for some reason…

Zanakin continues to scry, looking for the golden information on where the party is located, and when. It is during this time that he determines the location of the enemy keep, and that the Grand Deliverer is there, with the Minator, the Wizard, and the Rogue!

2 Marpenoth
Maythor reaches Level 11!

2 Marpenoth
Zanakin plans to bring the rest of the party to their location, so he teleports himself, Shandra, and Meriam to Castle Blade. In the process, he mis-directs his teleport and lands in the middle of a swamp! He eventually makes it to the Castle Blade.

3 Marpenoth
At Castle Blade, a large caravan from Arabel arrives bring much needed supplies for building and the winter. The party plans for an attack on the Grand Deliverer’s Keep in the Mulmaster controlled city of Kiram.

4 Marpenoth

Party: Maythor (LV 11), Zanakin (LV 11), Devrille (LV 8), Shandra (LV 8), and Meriam (LV 5)

The party readies for travel, and when ready is attempted to be teleported to the town outside Grand Deliverer’s Castle. They are mis-directed, and land on a rocky outcropping on the edge of the Dragon Reach!

5 Marpenoth
The next morning, the party readies for another teleport. Zanakin should be able to teleport them inside the Grand Deliverer’s Keep because of knowledge of some of hte main chamber. They ready themselves for battle, and buff with spells such as False Life (Zanakin), Stoneskin (Zanakin), and Invisibility Sphere (all).

At nightfall, they teleport inside the keep, and find success!

NOTE: Much of these battle notes are lost to history, here is what the GM remembers:

The party teleports inside the keep under an invisibility sphere. Inside, the Blackguard is not aware of the party, and is with the Minator and 3 guards. Once the party is inside, they attack!

The party quickly finds the Minator and Blackguard are very powerful and nearly outside of their ability to fight! The gaurds arre defeated early, and the party engages the Blackguard and Minator. However, alarms are sounded, so the party expects more enemy at any moment. The enemy wizard arrives within a few rounds to help his allies!

Meriam attacks the Blackguard directly as he is any Paladin’s mortal enemy. Prior to engaging Meriam, the Blackguard uses a Bead of Force on the party, and targets Maythor (as recalled). Some party members take damage, but Maythor is captured by the spell. Devrille removes the hold effect via a Dispel Magic, but not before the Blackguard (Fighter 6, Blackguard 7, ECL 13) makes quick work of Meriam, and she is killed.

Once released, Maythor battle the Minator Barbarian (Level 8 Barbarian, ECL 12), and finds that the creature is his equal in battle. Maythor succeeds in killing the creature, but he is very wounded. Devrille engages the Blackguard. A massive sword-strike by the Blackguard ends Maythors life. Zanakin and Shandra able to defeat the Wizard in battle, but are unable to save their friends. The party renders the defeated enemy unable to be Raised (though not Resurrect).

More soldiers enter the fray towards the end of battle and are defeated by Zanakin, Devrille, and Shandra.

Whats left of the party closes the doors, and grabs everything of value that they can and throw it into their Bag of Holding. This includes Maythor and Meriam! They then fight their way outside the keep (minimal resistance), and flee into the darkness to find a safe-haven far from the Keep. During the exodus, they hear bells going off in the town down the mountain trail, and troops moving en-mass towards the keep.

Loot: +3 Long Sword, Dark Full Plate +2, +2 Heavy Steel Shield, Ring of Sustenance, Cloak of Resistance +1, +1 Great Axe, +2 Chain Shirt (large), Ring of Protection +2, Ring of Jumping, a few other minor items

Devrille makes enough experience for level 9.

6 Marpenoth
Via Zanakin’s teleport, the party arrives in Suzail. The party brings both Meriam and Maythor to the Temple of Tyr in the city. The High Priedt of Tyr’s priests work their divine magic’s and are able to Raise Maythor and Meriam! Both lose a level in the aftermath. Maythor is also left with a large scar across the left side of his face from the massive sword-blow he took. The temple does not charge the party for the raising.

The Talisman

Date: May 2008

3 Eleint [SEP] (DR 1363)
Zanakin teleports himself and Shandra successfully to Suzail outside EERAM’S MAGICAL ESTRUARIES to check on +1 Club. The shop did not find one. Zanakin orders a +1 Club (to have a wizard make one, Eeram’s can do the interface). They request 1,500 down. Zanakin purchases Gauntlets of Ogre Power for Maythor, 4,000 gold.

Zanakin visits the alchemist shop for supplies, and he picks up Brom’s armor and shield and has the shop bring it by cart to MarcusLor’s Keep.

Zanakin and Shandra spend the night at Crownguard Keep.

4 Eleint
Zanakin and Shandra leave Brom’s armor at Marc’s hold and teleport successfully outside of the grand Chauntea Temple in Arabel. Inside Zanakin requests to speak with the priestess Neriana. She is summoned.

The characters catch up for a time. Neriana tells Zanakin that Corenia appears during evenings, and she will let her know she is in town if he would like t talk to her. Corenia may not be open for adventure yet.

Shandra leaves to speak with her old friends, Zanakin goes to the Grey Goose to tavern watch and get a room that afternoon. Shult remembers Zanakin but does not talk to him much.

5 Eleint
The next day Shandra and Zanakin meet at the temple and talk with Corenia. Corenia agrees to travel to Silverymoon with the party, but is not ready for adventure yet.

Zanakin teleports himself and the two women to MarcusLor’s keep successfully and picks up Broms armor and shield. Afterward, Zanakin teleports himself and the two women to Castle Blade successfully.

Zanakin and Maythor give the armor to Brom. He tries it on, and it fits well.

6 Eleint
Zanakin teleports back to Suzail and changes the order at EERAMS MAGICAL ESTRUARIES from a +1 Club to a +1 Great Sword (Long Sword for Brom)

12 Eleint
This day 120 Purple Dragons, 4 War Wizards, and 2 Priests of Tyr appear at the castle. With the contingent are Duke Lord Mandarek and Baron Thomdar.

A few key names are:
Thomdar, Baron
Duke Lord Mandarek
Lionar Vestman
Feritas, War Wizard
Enteldiak, War Wizard
Emron the Red, War Wizard
Byriak, War Wizard

Maythor gives Thomdar and Mandarek a grand tour of the castle grounds. The group eats and talks together that evening. Mandarek gives the party the 5000 gold for the Pyro-Hydra.

13 Eleint
Thomdar and Mandarek spend the day at the castle grounds, and ride out on a patrol to see the surrounding lands.

That evening Baron Thomdar gives a grand speech to the men of Castle Blade. Morale is strengthened.

14 Eleint
The party finds that Thomdar left via teleport the evening before.

The contingent of Purple Dragons leave with Mandarek that day. Mandarek informs them that they will switch out the Purple Dragons at the castle by winter.

Note: Maythor still owes 150 gold to the keep treasury for his training.

16 Eleint
A young lad is rescued by a cavalry patrol near the mountains. He was just moments away from death by a Hobgoblin mounted patrol. No battle happens, the Hobgoblins retreat to the mountains.

The party meets with the boy who is very scared. He tells them a horrific tale about a female Paladin named Meriam who gave him an important wooden case (in his possession), and that he must deliver to Castle Blade. The paladin most likely fell in battle to an evil group that stopped the caravan he was on. He had been running through the mountains for the last 6 days.

Devrille senses great evil inside the case, and warns the party. Devrille knows he cannot touch it. Maythor opens the small wooden case to see a strange Talismen.

Later that evening, a assassin kills two guards of the COB and leaves a note: “Give the talisman back by an unarmed man at the crossroads at noon the next day, or the castle will be destroyed, and the Paladin that they have alive will be killed. Give them the Talisman, the Paladin will be freed, and the Castle will be unharmed.”

The party decides to alert the High Priest of Tyr. Maythor writes a note to be given to him.

Zanakin teleports to the High Temple of Tyr in Suzail that evening with Endis.

At the High Temple of Tyr, Zanakin is allowed to enter after much discussion. Inside, Zanakin is met by the great Paladin Calais Bryant.

Calais Bryant tells him to rest that evening, and they will travel to Castle Blade the next day.

17 Eleint
Zanakin is met the next morning inside the temple by a large contingent led by the High Priest of Tyr, Druim Beldathian.

Druim tells Zanakin to remove any protections on him so War Wizards can scry on him when he reaches the Castle. Zanakin does so.

Zanakin teleports himself, the High Priest, and 2 Priests of Tyr to Castle Blade.

Following closely behind are 2 Paladins (one being Calais Bryant), 4 War Wizards, and 2 Priests of Tyr.

After much discussion on what to do, it turns out Druim is very concerned about the future of the castle. He believes if they destroy the enemies, it may bring wrath upon the castle. On the other hand, the enemy cannot get their hands on the talisman.

Druim decides he will be the one to bring the talisman unarmed to the crossroads. A plan is created to allow the War Wizards to scry upon the High Priest once a weather change signal is sent, and if trouble arises, teleport to the crossroads. On the other hand, if trouble arises, he thinks he can handle the enemies with pure spell power delivered from Tyr.

Druim ridees to the crossroads with Morthrou and Zanakin, but leaves them out of eyeshot of the crossroads. Druim ditches his mount in a grove of trees, casts the signal 10 minutes out, and walks to the meeting place.

Once the enemy meets (the party sees only a priestess of Loviatar and a great Minator Fighter) with Druim, they instantly know they are undone. Druim tells them to leave, leaving the Paladin alive, or face their doom. The enemy back off, and are teleported away from the site.

The party scrying on Druim teleports to the site (one group with Calais Bryant off-shoots the site). The Paldain Mariam is left alive, but broken. Druim completely heals her. The party walk back the rest of the way to the castle grounds. Druim talks to the group and Maythor along the way.

Druim and his entourage will stay the night in the party’s tower, and will leave with the Talisman the next day.

The party talks with Calis Bryant and Mariam; Calais Bryant talks of retribution no the Temple of Loviatar in Mulmaster (where the evil group came from). Druim had told the group that Mulmaster is now allied with Zhentil Keep…

Before the end of the day, Maythor asks Calais Bryant what he knows of the World Serpent Tavern. Calais explains it is an outer world tavern that only powerful people visit for their own reasons. He has never been there, but he understands the way to enter is by standing under the Grey Goose sign at midnight, and when the wind changes, say a special command word, enter the Inn, and whoever enters will enter the World serpent Tavern. He tells them to be prepared, it is not a friendly place.

Maythor still requires 16 days of training to make 11th level at this point.
